Bedrock wines?

by Jenise » Wed Feb 19, 2014 2:06 pm

I read a post on another forum where someone mentioned California winery Bedrock in the same sentence with Washington syrahs from Cayuse and Reynvaan, suggesting that Bedrock delivers in the same way for a third of the price. Well, it's probably closer to half, but still, they caught my attention. And this morning I got an offer from a local retailer for Bedrock wines, which includes some "heritage" blends that look like the old California field blends of 40-50 years ago, the kind Ridges still makes, with zinfandels, cinsaults, carignans and the like. Intriguing!

Any fans here?

Somewhat limited experience...I have had one of the field blend wines....but I enjoyed it and they have a good "wine geek" reputation...and can be found heavily available at some of my favorite local shops!

THIS offer you might go for! 8)

Done.

Prolly lot cheaper down there. They want $38 and $48 for the two Heritage blends up here--I bought two of each, plus a trio of the syrah.

Never tried one but just stood up one (for drinking over the next 2 weeks) so I'll report back. I think its something like Kirschenmann Vineyard. It was $35.

Joel Peterson's son is the winemaker.

Had a Bedrock wine last Thanksgiving. It was quite good, if a bit lush for my palate preferences.

I really liked the Ode to Lulu rose, and liked the Shebang red blend, but not had the pricier wines.

Uhhhhhhh....mmmmmmm....hmmm...well, Jenise....I followed them from the very start....as they say out on the InterNet.

Morgan Twain-Peterson...working w/ his Dad, Joel Peterson/Ravenswood.

They bought the very old BedrockVnyd in Valley of the Moon some yrs ago. Mostly field-blend Zinfandel.
He, like MikeOfficer/Carlisle, TeganPasallaqua/Turley, JakeBilbro/LimerickLane; are all focusing mostly on old-vine vnyds,
mostly Zinfandel & field blends. They're all birds of a feather.
The Heirloom blends and the Zins are Morgan's strength. Made in a rather old-timey style like his Dad used to do (still does) at Ravenswood.
He does make a few Syrahs, but the cpmparison to Cayuse/Reynvaan is a bit of a stretch.
He also makes some whites, old-timey in style, that are quite good as well. Old-vine Semillon from MonteRossoVnyd, for one.
The wines are all very reasonably priced for their quality.
So...yes....I'm a (big) fan of the Bedrock wines.

This is all good to know! No whites, unfortunately, were included in this offer, and they mentioned that the She-Bang had sold out at some tasting they did. The two blends, syrah and two or three zins were all that was available, an Old Vine zin for $28ish and a single vineyard Monte Rosso--which of course I recognize from the Ravenswood line-up--for $55. I probably should have bit at those but somehow zin doesn't interest me as much as it should. That is, I love Ridge, Biale and old Ravenswoods but have not been a fan of much else, so I kind of forget how good they can be.

+1 re what Tom Hill said, am also a big fan of their Rose and Sauv Blanc..Their Syrah 101 and Zin 101, if you will, also represent excellent value, also quite delicious, is a joint venture with Mike Havens, an Albarino from Napa called Abrente

Jon,

I'm having a hard time following your sentence construction. What specifically is a joint venture?

Not Jon, but.....the Abrente Albarino is a different label from the Bedrock and is a cooperation betwixt Morgan & Michael.
It is quite good expression of Albarino.

So MIchael Havens is back in the business? I used to be a fan of the Havens winery wines.

The old Havens label is now owned by a plonk maker, by the way, and has nothing to do with Havens (Mike) or even the post-Mike Havens winery1 .

As far as I know, Mike and Morgan have had a joint venture for at least 3 years re the Abrente Albarino..It is sourced from Napa fruit..The first time it was offered to me, it was a stand alone offering and I didn't take any..The next time arund, it was offered along with a number of other Bedrock wines and I purchased some..This time around, it is also included in the current Bedrock offering ad I will again be buying..Don't know if Mike is making any other wines or not..This one is not under the Havens label..the "excellent value "was intended for Bedrock's basic Syrah and Zin, roughly $20/btl, not included in the current offering..The "also quite delicious" did iindeed apply to the Albarino..with all due apologies , re the sentence structure, to my parents who were English teachers, and to Tom T who struggled through it..
