Groundhog Day Wine

by Gary Kahle » Sat Feb 01, 2014 6:19 pm

What are you planning to open to celebrate Groundhog Day? Hey really, Punxsutawney Phil has been working hard since 1887 to let us know what to expect as far as when spring will arrive. I know he’s getting some support from other rodents across USA and Canada but I think it’s time we pitched in. I will chill a nice wine and await Phil’s prediction tomorrow morning. If he does NOT see his shadow I will open the wine to celebrate an early spring. If he does, I guess I’ll just keep in chilled for 6 more weeks. And the wine will be…. A dry Rose of course. What better wine to drink to honor the coming of spring?
Could this be the start of something big? Groundhog Day tastings next year?

Since it is also Super Bowl Day, we will stick with brews and nachos.

If I had to pick a Ground Hog Day wine it would likely be ESJ Bone-Jolly because I drink it again, and again, and again AND I always enjoy it.

I don't see how Phil could have seen his shadow with the rain this morning but he has spoken. I had a 2012 Lancyre Rose chilled and ready to drink but it's going back to the cellar in exchange for a 'winter red'. After the cold and snow we've had in Traverse City, early spring would be welcome. This is our first winter here and it looks like records could be set. Snowfall this season-to-date is well over 100 inches! And... I'm starting to understand why our street was named "WIND DRIFT DRIVE"!

Cute reply Sam.
I was born and spent most of my early years about 25 miles from Punxsutawney and don't remamber groundhog day getting much attention.

just found a domaine hureau saumur from '05. guess i should get into that. someone is bringing champagne - no problem there. also brought up one of the special edition rieslings from Good Harbor. might as well have a borgesmorg. almost forgot to do the shrimp to give them time to chill. later.
