WTN: Montelena Estate Cab and Ridge MB

by Tom Troiano » Fri Jan 31, 2014 6:35 pm

Had these with grilled lamb, celery root mashed potatoes, yellow squash and roasted brussel sprouts.

1996 Ch. Montelena Estate Cabernet
Gorgeous garnet/red color. Lots of pepper spice, anise, cedar, cigar and cherries on the nose. On the palate mature cherry and blackberry fruit, some spice, incredible balance and length. Very elegant wine. Probably not one of the greatest Montelena’s but extremely enjoyable on this night. Lasted forever in the glass. Decanted about a ½ hour before serving. Probably not one to age long term.

1999 Ridge Monte Bello
One the nose some plums, cedar, tobacco, leather and raspberry notes. Some Draper perfume but not too much. On the palate some raspberry, blackberry, spices, oak and definitely a hint of chocolate. Very long and elegant. Probably could have been opened 2-3 hours before. This wine could also probably benefit from more cellaring. Liked it a bit more than the Montelena.

Geez Tom, the Montelena is seventeen years old, not ancient but still I would call it an aged wine. My problem with Montelena, Ridge MB, and just about all the first class cabs from CA have become so damn expensive. Prices on some have become ludicrous but the market determines the prices.

Lou,

Very poor choice of words on my part. What I meant was that I don't think the Montelena will improve with additional cellaring.
