Oregon's 2012 vintage

by Jenise » Thu Jan 30, 2014 6:33 pm

Apparently, something exceptional, if this quote from Patricia Green Winery isn't overhyped: "The 2012 vintage in Oregon might be your chance to participate in something of a singular nature. The wines are extraordinary. They operate at such a unique and high level of balance that they are unlike any other wines we have ever made before. The fruit intensity they carry will make them fun, brilliant wines to drink when they are young but their acidity and tannic structure are such great foils that they should enjoy 15+ years of aging without any problems.”

And this coming right after Oregon's 2011! (I'm sure many of you have read this article: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/12/25/dinin ... .html?_r=0)

Can't wait to try some! :D

What exactly were the climate conditions like in 2012?

Growing/harvest conditions were ideal in 2012, and the winemakers were excited about the potential even just after harvest, mid-fermentation. I was there the last week of October 2012, and they were relieved how smoothly the season went after difficult 2010 and agonizing 2011. They were speculating 2012 would top 2008 as far as "ideal" vintages go - ie, it's pretty hard to make bad wine when Mother Nature cooperates so nicely. 2011 may not get the praises of the point worshipers, but it was a "winemaker's vintage" with many wines having great aging potential from those who don't screw them up. It will be fun to see how the 2012s compare with the 2011s, which are my favorite of recent vintages in Oregon.

Perhaps there is some Archery Summit in my future.
