Now I've tried all the samples of G. Descombes that I ordered a while back. And on the basis of these five wines, I strongly suspect that this will become one of my favourite producers in Beaujolais once I get to drink more. The basic, non-VV wines were brilliant. These two VVs were just as drinkable but also had an extra dimension to them. Descombes is often called the fifth member of the Gang of Four (Guy Breton, Jean-Paul Thévenet, Jean Foillard and Marcel Lapierre - though to be fair, quite a few others are also called the 5th member!) because of his similar "natural" take on Gamay and the wines' extreme purity and drinkability. Buy again? Absolutely!
Georges Descombes Morgon Vieilles Vignes 2010
13%. Very pretty wine. It smells pure and clean (despite there being a bit of something funky going on for the first glass). Delightfully light in body but not lacking in tension. Very moreish. Quite the perfect Morgon - apart from a little bit more age, I cannot imagine what more I could possibly want from a Morgon (or, indeed, wine more generally).
Georges Descombes Régnié Vieilles Vignes 2011
12,5% abv. A little bit estery at first; but that gladly clears up and proper wine surfaces. Sweeter fruit than the Morgon VV 2010 we had alongside this one and a generally less aethereal style. The palate seems more substantial but was still nicely refreshing and pleasantly light and racy. I did prefer the Morgon, but this was a beautiful wine also.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.
