Shipping in the Cold

What are the dangers of getting wine shipped with the current cold spell in the Northeast and elsewhere? One of the wineries I deal with has a very attractive offer right now and I'm tempted.

while I worry a lot less about cold than heat, you are taking a chance with any wine that is below 25 for a few hours. Wine will freeze, and if it does it'll push out the cork. Hard to believe that any winery would want to ship in current NE temps.

Carl,

I would bet that the winery would be willing to delay shipment until the weather moderates. Once they get their cash they usually don't care when they ship.

When making my wines at home, I cold-stabilize all my whites (and sometimes a red). Standard procedure for me is to put the glass carboys in my detached garage for 1-2 weeks when the daily highs are 30-35 and the overnight lows are 20-25. I've noticed that some ice crystals may form when it gets below 15. About 20 years ago, I left it out when the weatherman predicted a low of 10. However, when I woke up the next morning it was -5. 5 gallons of Chardonnay froze solid and broke the carboy. :(
