Calif., Russian River Valley, Joseph Swan Lone Redwood Ranch Zinfandel, 1998 Bought at the winery for $24.30 in 9/06 -- Rod was clearing out some library wines. 15.4% alcohol.
Still pretty tannic, a Lone Redwood characteristic. Well balanced, inky purple, sufficient aroma to get past my cold, no feeling of alcohol. Medium long. I'll keep the other bottle for a couple of years. I think I tasted it when it was released and passed -- it was big and tannic and brawny, not really my glass of Zin. Six years or so of being ignored (eight from vintage) helped a lot.
The Zin (at least) in Lone Redwood has been torn out and replanted. Yields on the approx. 75 year old vines were no longer sufficient to generate a profit. Rod tells me that the vineyard is "over by the airport".
