Interesting although too exxpensive Napa Malbec

by Brian K Miller » Fri Jan 17, 2014 3:01 pm

James Cole Winery, Oak Knoll Avenue at Silverado Trail.

I had met the young South African Assistant Winemaker at another winery once so I wanted to give them a try.

The wine that really really stood out was, of all things, a 2010 NAPA VALLEY MALBEC. Big plum fruit (as one would expect), but there were ALSO layers of earthyness and wonderful texture and a strong hint of that lovely FUNK that adds interest to SOME wines. I quite liked it!

The website lists the Malbec at $75.

Yes. I should be shot for spending that much money on one bottle of wine!

I was too embarrased to mention it.

But there are a lot of mediocre Napa Cabs at this price point, and this was much more interesting than most of them!

We will see in a few years what Napa wines cost. Absolutely no rain this "rainy season". I hope the persistant high does not translate into a scorching summer. :(
