My mystery bottle of wine

by Anthony C » Thu Jan 16, 2014 5:46 pm

I appear to have an odd wine mystery, having found a bottle of wine in the garage (underneath an old ironing board).

It says

Chateau La Garenne, Gaillac, 2001

Ive found it in my house, I don't even know if I bought it-it could be left from the person who owned the house before me. To be honest, in 2001, I was 14 so I couldn't tell the difference between Wines and wine gums, so I doubt I was out buying wine.

I suspect its a very cheap bottle of supermarket plonk, but ive googled everything ive read on the bottle and cant find a thing about it.

Is it any good? I doubt it, but still, if its there, I might as well drink it! (waste not.....)

In the garage under an old ironing board, huh?

You feelin' lucky, punk?

Lol. Hopefully you live in an area where the interiors of garages maintain an even, reasonable temperature all year round. Otherwise it may not matter what it says on the lable. Inside will be Essence of Evil.

But the only way to really find out is to go for it, right? Just give it a good sniff first, and maybe force a drop into your parakeet and see if it survives for good measure. If it passes both tests, take a swallow and see what you think. Then report back here :D

BTW, Gaillac is in the south west part of France. It's pretty much just outside of Bordeaux, and they grow some of the same grapes, but for the most part their wines are very different.

Here's a good little synopsis: http://www.wine-searcher.com/regions-gaillac

Drink up!

I'm not sure how you tried googling, but I just googled the wine as you typed it and discovered the 2008 was being sold in 2010 for under 3 Euros:

I wouldn't hold out much hope for a 2001 stored in less than ideal conditions being good to drink!
