WTN: 2012 Briords, QPR of the Year?

by Clint Hall » Sat Jan 04, 2014 8:53 pm

I bought it in the waning days of December, so I guess this qualifies to compete as the 2013 QPR of that year. I suspect the 2012 Pepiere Briords is going to be one of the best Briords in recent decades after it has a couple or so more months to settle down. We opened our first bottle for dinner two nights ago, found it slightly fizzy and gave it a half hour or so in decanter, but still there were rough edges. Twenty-four hours later, though, after overnighting in a 375, it was beautiful, classic Briords. Joe Dressner would have been proud. But for the present, I suggest giving it plenty of air. My price paid was $15.69.

Briords is always a solid choice. So solid that it probably should be retired from the competition.

If I had to pick a wine it would be the 2012 Merkelbach Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Kabinett. $14.99 and the flavor of a wine three times the price.

Indeed. I sometimes hesitate because it seems too easy and obvious. But it never disappoints!

Terry Theise "retired" Donnhoff from his choices for winery of the vintage in his portfolio after a too long string of selections. Retiring Briords from QPR selection seems similar.
