2002 Trimbach Riesling Cuvée Frédéric Emile - France, Alsace, Alsace AOC (12/20/2013)
Served the same evening as a bottle of 2001 Clos Ste. Hune, this was decidedly more austere. There was an odd funk when the bottle was first opened, but that blew off in about 30 minutes, leaving a bright, minerally, subtly fruited wine that was frankly a bit angry to be opened. This was completely different than any other time I had experienced the wine, and as such more than a bit of a surprise. I guess that after a number of years of being open and delicious it has clamped down for some slumber. I think I will try another bottle soon, just to confirm, but it looks like this now needs significant cellar time.
