WTN: 2005 Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau", Chateauneuf du Pape

2005 Domaine du Vieux Telegraphe "La Crau". H. Brunier & Fils, Vignerons. 14.5 % abv. Very dark purple and opaque. I was a bit all over the place on this wine as are the CellarTracker notes. (On CT some say this is primary and needs more cellaring and some say it is ready for drinking. They tend to agree on red fruit notes, mainly cherry and some say raspberry but initially I was getting black fruits.)

Fine-grained tannins. Tobacco and tea leaves with dark fruits on the first evening. Approachable now but slightly brooding note. It may offer more with further cellaring. I enjoyed this with broiled lamb chop and potatoes but wasn't completely wowed. It did seem a little more mellow on the second evening and morphing from dark fruits to cherry notes. I ended up feeling I got my money's worth from the bottle but was not crazy about it. I don't drink a lot of Southern Rhone wines and it isn't one of my favorite regions so maybe I'm not the one to do this wine justice. It has almost a 92-point average rating on CellarTracker.

My best guess would be that the "more cellaring" crowd is on the right track.

I have not even broached any of my 2000s yet.

The '05 CdP are quite age worthy. I have two 2005 La Craus. I don't plan to crack the first one until 2017.

On the other hand the '04 La Crau is drinking great right now. My 2000 CdPs did not live to see the new decade... damn my impatience!

I've almost finished off my '89s, but still got a fair supply from the late '90s. The aughties? Not for a few more years, at least.

Your "aughties" should be good go for quite some time, Mark. I wish I hadn't drank all of mine.

Agree - the 93 and 94 need drinking but no rush on the 95 and 98!

I think 2005 is quite a structured vintage for CDP. And I like it for that!

I'm just starting to tuck into my 2001 CDPs now, many of which are still quite youthful.
