Pais and Foillard!

by Brian K Miller » Mon Dec 09, 2013 12:40 pm

Tried a new grape variety (new to me, ancient though!) PAIS, which is apparantly a Misison Grape used primarily now for cheap jug wine.

Anyway, this was a delicious, earthy "natural wine" kind of quaffer. A bit funky. Reminded me strongly of some of the Southwestern France wines like Fer Savedo???? and Marcillac. Nice!

2013 Foillard Beaujolais Nouveau. I know I am not supposed to like BoNo, but if it tastes like THIS, I will continue to do so! Lovely cherry fruit, blazing acidity, and that awesome Foillard funkyness! Delicious.

I also tried an Amazing Sonoma Semillon, two delicious German Rieslings, a fine affordable Santenay Burgundy, and an Aligote. I did not write down the names or vintages of any of these wines.

I sometimes buy Santenay as a comparative QPR for red Burgundies.

Yes, I think this was in the $30s. It was actually a little discombobulated at this point, but it had things going on I don't find in American Pinots.

Why are you not supposed to like Beajolais Nouveau? With Foillard, all is accepted!

 8)

I also liked a very Foillard-esque Kermit Lynch Beaujolais Nouveau! Others described it as tasting like home-made wine. As if this were a bad thing!
