WTN: a super limited release wine!

by Saina » Sun Dec 03, 2006 3:35 pm

A super wine and super-limited amounts made (under one case I understand):

The lovely gf just opened a totally blind wine for me, sent by BenRo (thanks!!). The colour is more like a rosé than a red, but the nose is more red-like than rosé.

The first thought that came to me upon sniffing is Beaujolais, but not Cru as there isn't enough depth and complexity. But the colour just does not fit.

There is raspberry, earth and even the tiniest hint of minerals (always positive for me! ;) ). The palate seems to have a bit of residual sugar, is very fruity, not tannic, but has adequate acidity. I would not say that it is very acidic, but it does taste fresh and I like it very much.

My guess: Beaujolais. But what in Bojo? Does not have the complexity or depth of Crus. Odd. Besides, who makes a rosé that acts like a red in Bojo? I'm at a loss. Whatever, I like it very much.

... a little time forward, and gf shows the bottle:

Bloody hell!!! It's Passionvale Gooseberry 2005. This is BenRo's own wine.
I don't drink wine because of religious reasons ... only for other reasons.

Cool, how did they get the rose colouring out of gooseberry? No mention of nay sourness either.

Gooseberries come in several color variations, including green, yellow, pink, and nearly black. There are also two species: American Gooseberry (Ribes hirtellum) and European Gooseberry (R. grossularia). They're related to currants. (Google is a hell of a tool :D )
