they're talking about chemically changing the wine..

Who wants that? What effect would it have on the taste of the wine?

It's a solution for a problem where the solution is worse than the problem.

Incidentally the article says "France bans screw-tops outright"....

well, not outright because I have had French wine (and others) bottled in France with screwcaps, including Bordeaux reds and I beleive

I can't recall if screwtopped wines are sold in France, but I know theysell wine in plastic bottles that don't have corks. :)

Heck, the French sell wine "en vrac", which means that you show up with your own container and they put the wine into it, dispensed from something that looks like a petrol station pump.
