WTN: MariettaCllrs PetiteSirah '90...(short/boring)

by TomHill » Sun Dec 01, 2013 9:08 pm

Tried this over the weekend:
1. MariettaCllrs PetiteSirah AlexVlly/SonomaCnty (13%) ChrisBilbro/Geyserville 1990: Med.dark color w/ slight bricking; very earthy/dusty/OV quite perfumed/almost Brachetto-like quite spicy/peppery light Am.oak/vanilla/toasty very aromatic very slight bretty/horsecollar exotic/complex nose; soft rather pepperry/PS some earthy/dusty/OV quite perfumey/Brachetto-like light vanilla/Am.oak flavor w/ smooth/well-integrated tannins; soft/lush/smooth very aromatic/Brachetto-like light peppery/PS rather dusty/OV light Am.oak/vanilla finish w/ light /smooth tannins and a slight tannic bite in the backtaste; a beautiful/fully-mature PS.

A wee BloodyPulpit:
1. I have followed ChrisBilbro's Marietta wines from the very start. The OldVineRed is a classic great-value/great-drinking Calif red. The wines tend to be on the rustic/brawny/rambunctious side. They are always good/solid values.
This PS was much better than I was expecting. It had aromatics unlike any I can recall in a mature Calif PS. It actually reminded me more of Piedmontese Brachetto than anything.
There is much change afoot in the family operation these days. The old LimmerickLaneWnry was purchased several yrs ago and sons Jake & Scot are running that operation. The '11 vintage, just being released, are the first wines totally under Jake&Scot's control. Other son, Sam, runs a wnry known as Idlewild. Just ordered some but not yet tried them. They recently purchased the GibsonRanch, up in McDowellVlly. This old-vine vnyd is a national treasure. Oldest planting (to my understanding) of Syrah and GrenacheGris in the USofA. More of these grapes will probably end up in OldVineRed. Exciting times for the Bilbros and us consumers.

It was just hiding back in the furtherest reaches of my cellar. More orphans to
come today.

Thanks for the update.

I've been a Marietta fan for some time myself.

Tom, you're probably old enough to remember (and not so old you've forgotten) the old Parducci PSs, along with the Merlot-Cabernet blends from up in Mendocino. Some gorgeous and amazingly long lived wines, those were.

Yup...remember those Parducci PS's well. They got a lot of age in large old oak ovals and were kind of gentle PS's. Back then, I was
looking for power/extraction/alcohol and subtle/nuance were beyond my grasp.
