Wine Focus for December and the holidays! What'll it be?

by Robin Garr » Fri Nov 29, 2013 12:06 pm

Let's hear your nominations, always keeping in view that the subject topic should be interesting, broadly available (or at least an available substitute) and generally within the average forumite's price range.

Fortified drinks such as Port, Sherry, and Madeira? Maybe throw in sparkling wines to broaden the categories even more?

Or, re-stated ...

Bubblies and stickies!

Do I hear any objections?

Does the term 'sticky' apply to port, sherry and madeira? I thought it was for late-harvest sweet wines. Don't you mean; "Bubblies, stickies, and fortified wines?"

I thought those wacky Australians used "sticky" to apply to all sweet and/or fortified wines, but maybe not? We certainly don't have to use that term.

Stickies would seem to be a reference to sticky, as in sugar. I don't see how the term would differentiate between fortified or late harvest wines. If the other other Professsor cares to do a literature review have at it.

I have never seen "sticky" used to refer to Port, Madeira or other fortifieds EXCEPT for things such as PX Sherry.

That said, I am going to be crazy busy in December and unlikely to really participate except by chance.

Nothing sticky, sugary or late-harvest about most sherry. (Except for PX as mentioned by David) And even most Port is not really texturally 'sticky' in the same way as Sauternes, TBA, Coteaux du Layon, Tokaji, etc.

Okay, "sticky" is out, but it's December now! So, "Sweet, Fortified and Bubbly" it is! I'll start a new topic and let this one sink. Thanks, all! I'm looking forward to this one myself! I wish I hadn't given away a D'Arenberg "The Mud Pie" at Thanksgiving now.
