Wine value recommendations

by Drew Hall » Tue Nov 26, 2013 1:05 pm

Thanksgiving is at my sisters home this year originally for 10 people and I'm the wine guy in the family. Yesterday she confirmed that 26 people would attend....What?! All drink wine and are split between geeks and non geeks. Any specific value, bang for the buck, wines under $15 per bottle recommendations? Standard Thanksgiving food fare will be served.

anything we suggest may not be available locally. why not ask this question of your favorite retailer(s) and give us their list - look at their shelves for your own thoughts and then ask.

At those prices, I like German riesling QbA, Muscadet, basic Loire reds, or Cotes du Rhone reds for Thanksgiving food. But specific bottles depend on the store!

On the red side in the mid Atlantic area under $15, I'd say Bogle Petite Sirah and some Phantom if you can find it. Marietta Old Vine Lot 58/59 is also a decent value house red. I also recently had Apothic Dark which has teroldego...not bad for around $10 at most grocery stores - and that flavor profile was kinda new and interesting to me.

David is correct re specific recs. Category wise I'd agree with Rahsaan, and add sparklers, Beaujolais, and roses

Oh, what the hell- even if Drew can't find, fun to make a list.
Sparklers -Castellroig Cava, Gruet

Roses -ESJ is a bit over limit. Les Baux Gourgonnier, Burlotto, Chidaine, Oupia

Riesling QbA- my faves have edged over $15. Selbach and Dr L are crowdpleasers and inexpensive if not profound.
Muscadet=Pepiere, Luneau-Papin

Loire reds- Guion, maybe Baudry or Breton if on sale.
Rhone -Gonon Iles de l'Ardeche, Barou. Not quite CdR, but the Iche Heretiques is similarly styled. For big production, La Vieille Ferme isn't bad (red or white)
Beaujolais- Brun L'Ancien, Vissoux Tradition , Lapierre "Raisins Gaulois"

HAven't tried most recent Marietta, but not a bad suggestion.

Another Riesling rec: Merkelbach. Their kabinetts can be had for under $15. Also, Gysler makes some great value wines, including Riesling, Silvaner & Scheurebe in liters for under $15.

I'd look for Riesling and Beaujolais Cru or even Beaujolais-Villages. You might find decent Spanish wines in the under $15 range that might stand up to smoked or fryer turkey if that is on the menu.

Last year I took Bex Riesling and Jadot Beaujolais Village on thanksgiving for a rather large group non-wine geeks. For the price both wines were quite tasty and the masses loved them.

Also, when in doubt take a sparkling wine. It will be a hit no matter what food is served.

Both good recs, though I see Merkelbach for a bit more, though still relatively inexpensive. Leitz Dragonstone QbA remains under $15
