WTN: Albert Mann 2011 Gew. Yahoo!!

by Jim Grow » Fri Nov 15, 2013 10:51 pm

I opened this Alsatian with Chinese this eve and was pleasantly surprised, not by the quality but by the price. It was full of spice and white fruit and GREAT acidity ( a requirement) and with a screw cap I love to see. At %14 abv it was intense and very satisfying. At $17 I immediately got on the phone and ordered a case. Many Alsatians of lesser quality are much more expensive (their P.B. was $21 go figure?) I have finally found a recent vintage of Alsatian Gew. that is dry or near dry, full bodied, and extremely well balanced!

A dry Gewürztraminer from Albert Mann is indeed a surprise.

For me, too. To match Mann to dry and (relatively) cheap is a double surprise.
Last year, chez eux, the basic 2010 Gewurztraminer, screw cap, was € 14.
I go to Alsace every year but since 2010 I don't go at Mann anymore because their bottles are more and more expensive. Some bottles in few years have literally doubled the price. In 2012 the Revue du Vin de France proclaimed Mann "best producer of the year", so, as you can imagine, prices...

One of my favorite Gewurztraminer is their GC Steingrubler, a great bottle sometimes lacking in balance, especially young, being on the sweet side. I remember, some years ago, someone here on WLDG, very accustomed to alsatian wines, used to say that Mann's Gewurztraminers tasted like cough syrup.
