2011 Reuscher-Haart Piesporter Goldtröpfchen Riesling Spätlese Feinherb “ÜberSchwang”
Predominately limeade-scented nose, with some leesy/floral/mineral aromas. Medium to full-bodied, barely off-dry (certainly drier than the nose would suggest); moderately acidic, round, slaty, leesy, with lemon/lime, dark berry, and white fruit flavors. Bready/pink grapefruit finish. Really hits its stride on the second day, when it develops a pronounced licorice note, with the nose becoming less fruity, and more mineral. Very good. Definitely the most interesting wine that I’ve had yet from Reuscher-Haart – I hope that this is a sign of things to come from this estate, and that Mario Schwang can take things to the next level here.
2011 Weingart Spay Riesling Spätlese Feinherb
Full-bodied, round, off-dry, moderately acidic, lightly citrus/mineral/floral, with sugarplum lemon, and passionfruit flavors, plus some herbal/salty notes. More of a mineral edge on the finish. Very good+. (Terry Theise named this Mittelrhein Riesling as one of his favorite wines from his 2012 German catalog.)
