Reported change of direction at Bodega Weinert.

by Bob Parsons Alberta » Thu Oct 31, 2013 2:37 am

There were quite a few good discussions about the wines from Weinert (Mendoza) here on this forum.
UK folk (few yrs back) talked about new winemaker and a change in direction. I have just opened the 2005 Malbec which has been in my cellar for two years so eagerly awaiting to see how the Malbec will show.
Anyone here dabbled in Weinert of late?

TN: 2005 Weinert Malbec, Mendoza.

36 months old oak casks, $23 Cdn , cellared two yrs, believe winery holds back in their cellars?

Very dark, almost opaque centre. Light purple rim.
Tobacco, cassis on the nose, no poop or barnyard here forumites! "Redcurrants (?) and blackberry from across the table".
Still some tannins and quite dry. Hint of ripe fruit as it opens up on day 2! Very red berry-ish with black cherry tones. Remains old world in style for me, if one is drinking those ìnternational malbec fruit bombs, this one is not for you.
Food was rib-eye steak with fresh veggies.

I might like that one, Bob. I think that it was Oswaldo who said that they were going modern the last time we discusssed them but your TN shows that it hadn't gone very far in 2005.

Coincidentally, Jancis R cites a Weinert as one of her top wines under £10 http://www.ft.com/intl/cms/s/2/b1a7dca8 ... z2jbZtGlpp .
An interesting but very UK orienated article.

Thanks Tim, nice article for those in the UK. I wonder how the house-hunting is coming along?

Tonite I am going to celebrate finishing my new butterfly display for one of the inner-city schools by opening the `03 Gran Vino. Stay tuned forumites. Oh, third and last bottle.

WTN: 2003 Bodega Weinert Gran Vino.

Last bottle and quite exceptional. Good cork, opened and decanted one hour, slight trace of sediment.

Little brick on the rim but not much change in 2 yrs. Not so bright looking though.
Aromas fill the room on opening, not so meaty but noticed more oak this time around which is strange?
Still shows some tannins, earthy but nice balance. Berries, plum, cherry, overall quite dry and remains "old world" style. Fruit bomb folks will not like this one!
Day 2 some meaty tones have developed, more ripe on the finish. Great with pork tenderloin with a sun-dried tomato crusting.

Bob,

Your TN sent me rushing to Wine Searcher to do a search for Weinert in both Belgium and France. Alas, zero hits :( .
