I opened a Spanish Toro wine last night and the cork appeared to be a little different...it was very shiny on both ends.
It was one of those corks that is a standard cork in the middle (or, often, they're composite) with a thin (1 mm) cork disk glued onto each end. So far, so good.
But this one had a shiny surface on both ends. I grabbed my nearby scalpel (I often perform neurosurgery for my friends on my kitchen table....simpler than practicing law) and did a little exploratory surgery. The ends had a very thin/sorta stiff plastic attached that easily peeled off. It extended up the side of the cork a bit more than the width of the disks glued on the end.
Whazzat all about?? Never seen a cork like that. Is it meant to seal out any TCA contamination? Condoms for corks?? Anyone else seen one of these?
Tom
