Saratoga Wine Exchange

by Clint Hall » Wed Oct 16, 2013 7:56 pm

Anybody have any experience dealing with Saratoga Wine Exchange in Ballston Lake, NY?

The reason I asked is that a friend and I are interested in buying a case or so of a couple of Charbaut Champagnes (he the Charbaut NV Reserve Brut Rose and the NV Reserve Brut, me the Reserve Brut), and I see WineSearcher Pro lists the Charbauts in the US only at M&R Liquors and the Saratoga Wine Exchange. M&R Liquors apparently isn't the best place to shop (see separate thread), so that leaves only Saratoga Wine Exchange.

Plenty of shops carry Charbaut in various countries in Europe but, well, we aren't in Europe. By the way, I've tasted only the NV Brut (Premier Crus) and it's far from the WOTY but I think it would be a great crowd pleaser, at its usual low price.

I've ordered from Saratoga Wine Exchange a couple of times without any problems.

They've advertised with us in the past and passed our due diligence of the kind of quality we expect of advertising partners. I'm not sure their prices are always the lowest, but I'm convinced that they're reputable and honest.

Fair enough. I remember doing some comparing when they were advertising, and got the impression that their regular pricing was median to a little above, but with lots of good stuff on great sales. Classic retail, maybe, to get you in the door with a big sale and hope you'll stay to buy more at regular, fair prices?

Of course, they could have changed their model since then - it's been a few years.

I've ordered from them once or twice and don't recall that there were any problems.

Okay, I'm bringing this back up to report a single data point: In researching for a TN on Folie a Deux Dry Creek Valley Zinfandel, I notice that Wine-Searcher.com reports Saratoga the highest of 20 retailers for this bottle at $19.64, with a $16 median and lowest available price at $12.99.

This is not quite a horrendous crime against nature, but certainly worth noting.
