Sommelier Schools

I'm interested in learning more about wine, and as someone who tends not to retain much of what I read or hear, I think that some sort of structured learning environment would be better suited to me. So I'm wondering if anyone has any suggestions as to good beginner wine courses, schools, etc. I'd like to get a good, broad knowledge of the wine industry (production, distribution, etc) as well as an appreciation for the many different wines that exist, and some training for my nose/palate. I'm on the east coast, Washington DC, and I have subscribed to the Washington Wine Academy's newsletter, but I'd love to hear from anyone that might have any other suggestions. An introductory weekend course somewhere in the US would be a consideration. I appreciate any advice! Thanks.

New York Wine & Culinary Center which has many wine seminars and courses. It may be worth the 7 hour drive from DC.

I attended a weekend win fundementals intensive at the French Culinary Institute in NY a couple of years ago. We covered a lot of ground in two days and tasted dozens of good and type-faithful wines.

There is also an industry and wine sales sub-focus to the class. The redoubtable Andrea Immer (now Robinson) taught the class then. Don't know if she still does, but she has put together a rewarding program.

At almost $1000 its pricey, yet I found it well worth the money. Plus, you're in Manhatten within walking distance to all the cool attractions.

I highly recommend Andrea Immer Robinson's: "Andrea's Complete Wine Course" (Master Edition*) DVD. Check out http://www.andreawine.com

As someone who is a performer and a teacher, I find Andrea to be extremely articulate and organized in her presentation. This DVD will give you a very good introduction to the various styles of wines as well as the main regions of wine production. She also recommends wines to taste while you watch the DVD; these wines are usually available and not difficult to find. Learning to taste and learning to trust your own palate is key to learning about wines, in my opinion. She is very passionate and enthusiastic and presents the subject in a very down to earth way, which I appreciate.
