1998 Château Lafon-Rochet
DBKITC on Cellartracker nailed it, so I'm just going to repost his note with due credit: "Pretty garnet color. Classic St. Estephe nose of rich plum and berry fruit mixed with a meaty, animal fur note. Medium bodied wine that shows an austere fruit profile and a slightly undernourished finish. A classic wine that drinks better with food. Very nice QPR, but not for the fruit obsessed."
2011 Laetitia Winery Pinot Noir Reserve du Domaine
Agnes' bottle. Best wine I've ever had from this producer (who had not impressed in the past). Full bodied, balanced and highly aromatic with dark cherry fruit, beets, tomato skin, rare beef and this appellation's signature earthiness. Liked it so much I order six bottles since Ag gets it at the club price of $28 and was ordering more anyway.
2002 Rustenberg Cabernet Sauvignon Peter Barlow
There could be no better time in the life of this wine to open a bottle. It's lusciously middle-aged: secondary development is delivering complex, leathery notes in a very traditional, Bordeauxish framework, and yet the cab sauv fruit is base is warmly sweet and identifiable. This bottle is right now doing what South Africa does best, perfectly straddling the median beween old and new worlds.
