I hate wine gadgets but this one seems very interesting

Sorry if this has been discussed.

What do folks thin of the Coravin? I usually hate wine gadgets but this sounds very interesting. If it was half the price I probably would have already ordered one.

Imagine being able to taste each and every single wine in your collection without pulling any corks or wasting the remaining wine. Imagine having friends over and supplying a single glass of any wine from your cellar without pulling any corks or wasting wine. Imagine doing these things and more with the same or less effort as using a corkscrew. Congratulations, you just imagined the Coravin! By simultaneously injecting high purity argon and extracting wine, Coravin allows you to both enjoy your wine today and save the rest for the normal lifespan of the bottle. If your mind isn't blown by now, imagine enjoying a bottle of extremely expensive wine over the course of a decade rather than an evening. The permutations of use here are almost endless!

This device is, as Robert Parker calls it "the most transformational and exciting new product for wine lovers that has been developed/invented in the last 30+ years... a killer device." If you have a subscription to his website, Mr Parker has a pair of unscripted videos that reveal the beauty of this invention (just click his logo below the offer). Clicking on the Coravin photo below will bring you to the Coravin site which has a beautiful promotional video.

Coravin 1000 System
$299 net per System
This includes everything you need to start experiencing the future of wine collection from Coravin unit, Argon gas, to a storage base.
Coravin A65 Argon Capsule 2-pack
$21 net per 2-pack
You should get over a dozen 'pours' per capsule, so expect to blow through two or three right away as you 'test' bottle after bottle from your cellar!

Coravin has been discussed extensively elsewhere. I think I like the idea. Nursing a bottle over the period of a few weeks makes a lot of sense to me. I am not so much interested in the idea of going back to it months or years later.

The new paranoia is one of fraud - emptying a bottle of its contents via Coarvin and replacing it with Yellow Tail.

I do not own a Coravin yet, but I can see myself getting one once I see more of a consensus as to its effectiveness. It's a good chunk of change to be an early adopter.

David, thanks. I agree with everything you said - particularly the last sentence.

I was curious (regarding fraud) if the device prohibits you from injecting wine into the bottle. I guess not.

Thanks.

Interesting. Conceptually it's very much like the nitrogen dispensing system I've used for years, except that with Coravin you don't have to remove the cork. It's a lot more stylish than the nitrogen dispenser. It's also a lot more expensive, both the initial price and the replacement cartridges. $11.00 for 15 glasses works out to $0.73 per glass. A nitrogen bottle is good for about 20 cases of wine and costs $20.

Some potential problems with Coravin:

What is the flow rate of wine through the needle? How long does it take to pour a glass of wine with this thing?

What about sediment or tartrate crystals on the bottom of the cork? How easily does the needle get clogged?

Does this work with artificial corks? I'd be worried that they might not reseal once the needle is removed.

What about crumbly corks (vintage Port)?

Paul,

Just speculating here but I wouldn't think this device is a good option for vintage port.
