WTN: Prunotto Barolo Bussia 1999

Had some leftover porchetta from yesterday's party so decided to have it with my last bottle of Prunotto Barolo.

Prunotto Barolo Bussia 1999 - Decanted about 2 hours. Pretty deep color for Barolo but showing some brick around the edge. Fragrant wood, ripe black fruit and sweet spice on the nose. Tannins are already very smooth. Sweet black berries are in the foreground with the classic tar note following through in the finish. No roses, though. Not a real complex Barolo but very easy to drink. Could possibly gain a bit more character with a few more years but I'm perfectly happy with it now. Medium length. Very good and nice with the porchetta.

Jay, I see I have a mag '99 Prunotto Bussiathat I haven't thought about for years, so just now I checked Cellartracker to see what their TNs have to say about it, and they say pretty much the same thing you do. Nice wine. No big deal. Just about ready to drink. So I guess I better hold off on mine for a couple of years seeing that it's a mag? What do you think?

Hi Clint,

Yes, I think it would be worth holding on to it for a couple of more years. Possibly the tannins in a magnum wouldn't be as soft as from a regular bottle and, as I said, maybe a little more complexity might be forthcoming with more age.
