WTN: 1997 Ehlen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese, M-S-R.

I posted on the terrific`91 a while back so thought time to check out this `97 ($24).
There is still some on the shelves downtown and will be returning for more. I could not believe how fresh this auslese was still tasting but felt the acidity level was a tad low. Nevertheless, delicious with a hint of botyrtis.
Nose showed some lime and lycee, color was a very light gold. Very refreshing palate, sure some sweetness but all seems in balance. "No gasolein to speak of" from across the table. Went very well with honey garlic pork tenderloin.

No doubt the Riesling experts will correct me if I am wrong, but I recall that in Germany and Alsace 1997 was a quite low acidity vintage. Certainly the stash of Alsace 1997s which I bought at Weinbach were and I regret not having taken Colette Faller's advice to drink them up young.

1996, on the other hand, was the reverse. I sometimes wonder whether a blend of the two might not have produced more harmonious wines.

Thanks Tim, will open the `96 asap and if that good will be back for more. In-house PO is impressed with recent German selections.
