2002 Chateau Phelan Segur - Flawed bottle.
Opening and tasting this bottle was a very odd experience.
I opened the bottle for double decanting about 4 hours ahead of a dinner with friends. On initially pouring the bottle into the decanter I got a powerful nose of cherry and leather. Enough so that I suggested to my wife that she have a whiff. She sniffed and just gave a shrug. I didn't question her underwhelmed reaction at that point.
Having a laundry list of things to finish before leaving I poured the wine back into the bottle without checking it a second time, though in retrospect I did not catch a single whiff of the powerful aroma from earlier. When I opened the wine for dinner I gave it sniff and got nothing at all on the nose - absolute flat line. The bordeaux fanatic at the table who took the first pour literally coughed on tasting it. The wine was just an astringent mess. It reminded me of hot iodine or the medicine from my youth called Mercurochrome. A very nasty tasting experience ideed.
My wife said that she got nothing on the nose within the two minute is took her to sniff it after opening. I do not recall ever having such an experience with a wine in past. Any thoughts on what was going on here?
