Another request for TNs

by Marlyne K » Thu Jul 18, 2013 10:50 am

Any info on Silver Palm Cabernet, '10 or '11, and Josh Cellars Cabernet, also '10 and '11?
Thanks so much!
Also, have bought from WTSO; they seem to have an in-house "wine critic", Jonathan H. Newmann. Are his reviews to be believed, or are they a bit slanted to encourage sales? Thanks for opinions.

Marlyne,
From the bottom of WTSO's page:
*Jonathan Newman was Wine Enthusiasts’ Man of the Year. He also was Chairman of the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board, and received national recognition in Marvin Shanken’s Market Watch Magazine and many other international wine publications. He was also awarded the Guild of Sommeliers highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award. Mr. Newman's reviews have been published and quoted extensively online and in print. He travels extensively to many of the major wine growing regions and evaluates many of the wines we source from smaller and boutique wineries. We interact closely with him and the result is his rejection rate of over 96% of the wines evaluated.

Thanks. It's often hard to figure out, and your information is quite different from that of CellerTracker, which is why I requested the "review of the reviewer".
Now I just have to find out about the two wines! My take usually is "yummy", "yucky" or "nothing special"...it's only when the fruits or acidity or such is pointed out that I can recognize it. Eventually I hope to be able to distinguish things without hints.

Marlyne: Not to be contrarian, but, over the years, including JN's stint as chairman at PLCBO, I have found that my palate does not align well with his..ie, I have not liked a number of his slections..just my 2 cents, your mileage may vary..I do , however, buy a fair amount of wine from WTSO and their sevice is pretty good and their prices can be quite good at times ..But, none of my WTSO purchases were driven by JN's review of the wine..I just use WTSO for good prcies on wines or stuff from winemakers that I have some prior knowledge of or experience with.

Marlyne: Have had the Silver Palm in previous vintages.

Have to say I really didn't enjoy it very much.

It struck me as rather harsh, fruit forward, generic California red wine...somewhat sweet "supermarket" wine. But that is just my palate and my recollection. :?
