WTN: German Riesling Spatlese

by David M. Bueker » Sun Jul 07, 2013 1:58 pm

2001 Schmitt Wagner Longuicher Maximiner Herrenberg Riesling Spatlese
The word here is purity. Still young, but crystaline in structure, showing some smoke over crisp fruit and rocks. Fabulous and gone way too soon.

2004 Markus Molitor Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese
This was the antithesis of the Schmitt Wagner. It was heavy, dull and overwrought. It was more like Auslese*** than Spatlese and coated the palate with syrupy, confected fruit. A real disappointment.

Molitor has a pretty good rep, but I've never had one I really liked.

Hi David, sadly Molitor is talented but not consistent in terms of quality. I can tell of postive and negative experiences with his wines.
Here is one of his wines that I really like for its harmony and long life: viewtopic.php?f=3&t=46960
