Article: Consider the wine glass

by Robin Garr » Wed Jul 03, 2013 8:32 am

Interesting short article about design and the wine glass. Does some of its charm derive from the fact that it IS delicate, fragile and hard to handle?

Consider the Wine Glass
A wine glass is hard to hold and easy to break. And that's what makes it great.

Robin,
I can believe that. The shape and style of a wine glass affecting the taste is a well argued topic. But texture of the glass is certainly a factor. When I plan to have a wine that I consider is better, I tend to bring out my better glasses as well! Recently there was an article about color of cutlery affecting the perception of taste!

One of the lessons which I learned about the dangers of pontificating about wine was administered by the manager of our company's guest house, which had a good cellar.

He appeared towards the end of the meal with several glasses of wine and invited comments. Yes, you've guessed it; they were glasses of different shapes and sizes filled from the same bottle and I fell into the trap of trying to identify different wines  .

Don't worry - if you serve people the same wine more than once in the same glass in a tasting context they will usually happily rank them.
