Question about a Rosé

by Neil D » Tue Jul 02, 2013 11:53 pm

Dear all,
This is my first topic here. Having for a long-time been a reader of this forum, I finally registered.

I'm writing with a question that will quickly reveal me as an amateur with regard to wines. About one year ago, I sampled what was one of the best rosés that I have ever had, and I am hoping that someone here might help me identify it. I explain below why I no longer have the name of the wine, nor the name of its vineyard. It is an Oregon rosé, the bottle was screen-printed, and the bottle was corked (no screw-cap). These are the first clues.

As for the wine: it was a pink with a striking reddish-saffron hue. The aroma was intensely floral, with a little bit of sweetness (perhaps peach?) leading into a juicy flavor, also floral, with hints of watermelon and berry. It was crisp, but without a dry, citrus-y acidity.

After drinking the wine, I of course saved the cork. But as luck would have it, I recently moved and sadly lost it. If I lived anywhere other than Pennsylvania, I could perhaps walk back into the store and simply inquire. But here in Pennsylvania, alcohols are sold through state-run stores. When I returned to the place of purchase, I was told that the wine wasn't anything that was regularly carried and was surely purchased on a whim by the then-purchasing manager (now no longer an employee).

I've been trying to identify the wine -- and am wondering if anyone might have a clue as to what it is. If I am remembering correctly, the wine may have been produced on a sustainable vineyard (though I may be wrong about this). A colleague recently suggested that it may have been Domaine Drouhin....but to my knowledge none of their bottles have ever in screen-printed (though I might be wrong about this too).

Might anyone be able to guess what the wine was? (Perhaps someone in Oregon?) Thanks so much for reading,

Neil

I am confused as to why the note has importer information. deGrazia Imports LLC, works primarily if not exclusively with Italian wines.

That tasting note is identical to that of the Masserie Pizari 2012 Salento Rosato Negroamaro featured in the 30 second Wine advisor!!

Sorry about that! I had copied the note from the Masserie Pizari (30 sec advisor) to paste into a running file that I keep about wines. Somehow I managed to paste it into my message by accident!!! (it was late)

thanks for the replies though....no idea on the wine I'm looking for?

Don't know much about Oregon roses. It's almost impossible even if you have tasted all possible wines to identify from another's notes. But I am pretty sure the DDO (Drouhin) pink has a standard label. BEnton Lane has cool "stamp" style label, but don't think it's silk screened. What you might do is check Cellartracker to see if a name seems familiar, and then look at label (most have pictures). If about a year ago, if not on closeout it was probably a 2011

If you are trying to chase down one rose with some distinction from all the good rose's out there, you are truly looking for a hundred needles in the haystack! I would try, from Oregon, the Acrobat Rose' but very quickly look to Provence for some equally good substitutes that will soon make your forget about the Oregon rose'.

I believe Bone Joly is also distributed in PA if you wish to go south! The best "Merikan Rosé and one of the best in the world!

Cut to the chase: as in, the chase is what's important.

Just sample each and every rose that you come across, whenever you can. You won't be sorry.

(Albeit my favorites are Provence, where the sole reason for everything they do, the sole focus, is making rose.)
