Need Help: Wine travel in Napa, Sonoma

by Daniel K » Sun Nov 26, 2006 11:00 am

If I can get time of work in feb , I'm thinking of making a trip to California. The idea is to rent a car and drive around in Napa, Sonoma and Russian River. Perhaps i can get a week or ten days of.
So now I'm in need of your help:

-Where to stay? I don't want to spent a lot of money on accomondation, but at the same time I want to stay in "winecountry" Is this possible at the buget end of hotels and also are there any nice winerys you can stay at?

-This brings me to my next question, what winerys should I visit?

Restaurant reccos are also most welcome.

Thanks
The play was a great success, but the audience was a disaster

Hi, Daniel,

You might want to start by looking at this website: WineCountry.com. It'll point you in a direction for lodgings.

As to wineries, I guess you'd need to let us know what you know and what you like so folks can share their experiences.

You don't want my advice. I'm a skinflint of the old school!!

There is a fairly decent Super 8 Motel right in the city of Santa Rosa, which is very nicely situated for Sonoma and reasonable for day trips to Napa. Noplace in the wine country is really cheap, but I've found this one affordable and well-kept, although a bit spartan ... it's no romantic getaway, but at least it's up-to-date and clean.

Thank you both, as for my preferences regarding wine, when it comes to Napa, Sonoma etc it's more or less a blank sheet. There are very few American wines for sale in Sweden.
When it comes to wine in general I prefer elegance over power. Hopefully you'll now what I mean.
However I don't want to limit myself to wines that I most likely will appreciate, but rather take the opportunity to try wines I normally wouldn't buy. Therefore I'm up for all suggestions.

I wouldn't say that all California wines are powerhouses, but you will encounter any number of rock 'em, sock 'em, high alcohol, highly extracted wines as you traverse the well over 500 wineries which populate the area you mention. This ain't France, to say the least.

There are quite a few collective tasting rooms where you can familiarize yourself with the wines of several wineries at once. You might want to include one of these per day in your agenda. They can be quite congenial and practical, although they do not have that "I've-been-to-the-winery" feel. Then you might identify a few of the big names known to you in Sweden and make a point to visit these places. Finally, you can just pick a route and do catch-as-catch-can, ducking into places which just look interesting to you. As your departure approaches, you can also check to see whether there will be any special events happening.

As Robin suggests, "budget" and "Wine Country" do not usually inhabit the same sentence. But if you'd like a step up from the Super 8, then you might try this hotel: http://marriott.com/property/propertypage/SFOAC. It's not in a very pittoresque location, but it is only about a 10 minute drive from downtown Napa and about 20 minutes from downtown Sonoma. It's reasonably priced for the area and has free parking and all the amenities including breakfast. (I'm a traveling salesman so I sleep around, so to speak.)

When you've decided when you're coming and where you're staying, we can speak again.
And now what?

Very helpfull Gary, thanks! It looks like I'll have to postpone the trip for another couple of months, but I'll bring the topic back to life when the time comes.

Well, whenever you're ready, feel free to get in touch.

But now I have one question: Your profile says that you are a chef and a Swedish chef no less. Is there really such a thing as Swedish meatballs? And, if there is, what's the down home, Stockholm recipe? :)

I'll post a recipe in the forum kitchen in a day or two.

Thanks! We, uh, use grape jelly and bottled chili sauce to create ours. Looking forward to it!

(By the way, I just noticed your avatar. I can just imagine you singing, "Smørrebrød, smørrebrød, rum, tum, tum, tum, smørrebrød, smørrebrød, rum, tum, tum, tum.")

My few visits have always involved driving up through Napa and then back down through Sonoma or the other way around.
