Oops Westrey Chardonnay, Swan Pinot, Matello Syrah

by Jason Hagen » Sat Jun 29, 2013 2:50 pm

Just came across my 09 Westrey Chard ... so this note was actually for the 2010.

I updated.

  • 2010 Westrey Chardonnay Reserve - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley (6/12/2013)
Not a lot to say here other than this is wonderful. Flinty nose and rich palate. Should develop well. Seemed like there might be a small amount of RS. Bigger but balanced. (93 pts.)

  • 2006 Joseph Swan Vineyards Pinot Noir Saralee's Vineyard - USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley (6/12/2013)
A very pretty ruby red color. I really liked the aromatics on this wine, showing wonderful ripe cherry fruit. Maybe some stem inclusion. The smell of this wine is enticing. The palate is slightly candied and has a nice spice. Tastes like Sonoma pinot. Is that helpful? Showing nicely now but not sure if it will improve. There is a touch of heat. For me the aromatics were the star. (90 pts.)
  • 2010 Matello Fool's Journey Duex Vert - USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton (6/8/2013)
When I first popped this I thought it was corked. Thankfully it was not. But there was something there for the first 30 minutes or so. Once it went, it never came back. What can I say other than this wine smells great with just a little bit of air. On the palate this was a little harsh at the start. Earthy and meaty. On the second this became more alive. Smelling like a pretty and clean CdP. Clean and pure flavors. Would have guessed there was some Grenache in there. In need of some bottle time for sure but working great now with some air. (92 pts.)

Cheers,

Jason

I have one bottle remaining of the 2007 Joseph Swan Saralee's Pinot. The first bottle rather overpowered whatever food pairing I had in mind for it, so I may pair the remaining bottle with a steak or lamb chop. What were your thoughts on food pairing for the Pinot?

I don't recall having the 2007 but my assumption is that it would be slightly more toned down from the 06. But not sure. Not to familiar with the 07 RRV wines. But for me I think a lamb chop could work if going for straight forward meat flavors. Maybe a rich preparation of salmon or maybe a sausage mushroom risotto, using mild sausage.

But I think the lamb chop could be fun. My wife is not a big fan of lamb so I don't prepare it at home.
