WTN: 2-4-2 for Dinner..(short/boring)

by TomHill » Tue May 28, 2013 10:36 am

Cracked these two for dinner last night:
1. OjaiVnyd OjaiWhite Calif TW (14.0%) NV (ca.2006): Med.gold color; quite attractive/perfumed floral/insecticide/melony/Chard light tobaccoy/pencilly/oak/smokey some complex/old Chard nose; soft floral/aromatic/insecticide bit melony/old Chard light tobaccoy/pencilly/smokey/oak lovely flavor; med.long soft some melony/old Chard/oatmealy tobaccoy/smokey/pencilly/oak slight floral/apple blossom/peachy slight earthy/dusty finish; tastes like a rather aromatic old Chard, maybe some Viognier therein; still very much alive. $14.00

2. Carlisle PS DryCreekVlly (16.2%; 65 cs) 2002: Inky/black color w/ no bricking; beautiful boysenberry/black berry/very black cherry cola/RCCola some toasty/charred/oak very perfumed nose w/ no obvious alcohol or heat; soft very rich/lush intense boysenberry/blackberry/black cherry cola/spicy some dusty/OV bit charred/toastyoak slight alcoholic/hot bit pungent/licorice/RCCola lovely flavor w/ light/smooth/tannins; very long slight alcoholic/fumey very strong blackberry/boysenberry/black cherry cola/PS bit peppery/pungent some toasty/charred/smokey/oak finish w/ big/smooth/polished tannins; in a very nice place right now and probably as good as it's gonna get; a bit like some of the Biale or JacobFranklin PS's; a lovely Calif PS. $38.50

A wee BP:
1. The OjaiWhite is a blend of Adam's leftovers. When he is ready to btl, he pumps directly from barrel into the blending tank, leaving the leesy wine behind in barrel. He then runs these lees thru a filter to take out sediment and blends all the (white) varieties together. So...mostly Chard, some SauvBlanc, some Viog. The btls are not dated, though the last few yrs he's been doing a laser-etch in (very tiny) numbers on the btl of the btl date. From the Syrahs in this case ('04's), I'd estimate this was about a 2006 white blend. Thought it'd be on the shakey side, but still very much alive.

Yup...and at a very good price. A no-brainer every year.

$14 is nice.

I really like the Arnot-Roberts Old Vine White, but it's double+ the cost of the Ojai. That being said, there are completely different varieties in the mix for the two wines.
