2001 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru
Wonderful wine that is fully within an early drinking window. There is still a great deal of dark cherry fruit, but it is joined by a subtle, velvety earthiness. What captivates me about this wine is the texture. It is like robe for the palate, with great depth and richness while never seeming soft or formless. Perhaps that contradiction is what makes Musigny (this being young vine Musigny for those who may not know) what it is - a great mystery made from grapes. Just delicious.
2001 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques - France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
My first opportunity to taste the vaunted Clos St. Jacques from Rousseau, and it did not disappoint. Tasted alongside the de Vogue Chambolle 1er cru the terroir differences were more than obvious. The Rousseau showing a sterner personality, with more mineral depth and less obvious fruit. I find the Rousseau impressive in its form, being a monument of a wine that commands respect. Perhaps not quite as much visceral pleasure here though. Still outstanding.
