WTN: 99 Testarossa Pisoni, 00 Flowers CMR PN

A couple older pinot noir sampled recently:

1999 Testarossa Pinot Noir, Pisoni Vineyard, SLH: Bright medium red-blue to a pale garnet edge. Soft floral and crushed strawberry notes along with an animal sauvage quality, dark cherry and mild berry fruit with a pie spice accent on the nose. Cool and broad at first, turning quickly dry with a scorched earth quality that masks a core of rich, dried red berry and dark cherry fruit, quite wild with an underlying tartness that persists through a relatively long finish. 5/16/13

2000 Flowers Pinot Noir, Camp Meeting Ridge, Sonoma Coast: Medium red-blue to a pale garnet edge. Overtones of cinnamon and pie spice, wiry red berry and dark cherry fruit, cola and animal savor on the nose. Very dry, sharply acidic entry to a taut center where nervy red berry fruit meets pulpy dark cherry and plumskin, dusty forest floor elements and SC wildness add interest and the finish shows good length while maintaining the initial dryness. 4/25/13

These seem to share more similarities now than they did in their youth.

Wow - I cannot remember the last time I saw a note for a Flowers wine. Go back 12 years or more and they were the greatest thing since sliced bread. Whatever happened to them?

It seems their best days were back in late 90's and early 00's when Greg LaFolette and Hugh Chapelle were the winemakers at Flowers and were supported by a talented cadre of assistants who have also moved on to become great winemakers at other venues. Production expanded with increased plantings and the Flowers family sold out four or five years ago.

Quality may have slid a bit with their Sonoma Coast bottlings, and there are certainly more competitors in both the Sonoma Coast appellation and among vineyard designates from the area than there were ten to fifteen years ago.

Some time around 2001, the mow extinct "Toledo Group" did a tasting of various Flowers PN. Must have been at least 30 bottles of various vintages and vineyard selections. That cured my Flowers jones forever.
