Does Sparkling Vouvray age?

by Jim Grow » Sat May 11, 2013 3:05 pm

I have a bottle of 2005 Huet Brut Vouvray Petillant that I would like to lay down for 5-10 years. Will this wine improve over time and if so what is the life expectancy of it?

Good question. I must have drunk a six pack over the last 3 years and keep wondering whether I should maybe have kept a few in the fridge (I still have a couple of bottles left).

I am still sitting on a bunch of the 2002. It is reported to age very well, though I do not have 1st hand experience.

The 1964 still was quite interesting a few years ago. The '95 & 98 were good at age 10-12. I thought the 2000 was better at 7-8 years than at 10. I've got a lot of the 2002, should check in on. I've only had the '05 once, thought it could age. Gilman (who has long windows) says 2014-2040!

of course it will age - the question is whether you will like it when it does. i probably won't - you may. no way to tell till you try for yourself.

Thanks all for the info. I really like aged Champagne so if I can find more of this for the $12 I spent, I'll pick up more and lay some down.

$12 is a real bargain for the Huet Petillant. Over here, it's usually around $30.

If you only have the one bottle I would not play around. You may have waited too long as it is. If still in good shape you will not be missing a lot. It's not like there is something "other-worldly" awaiting you out there. Drink the damn thing. That's my take on your dilemma. Hope it works out for the best.

Waited too long? A very ageable wine that was released 2-3 years ago? While I may not call aged Vouvray petillant "otherworldy" I've never had a Huet bubbly I didn't think better with at least a bit of bottle age. And Jim stated he likes Champagne with age so it's not like a question of him preferring young fruit.

Wellstored bottles of 2005 Huet for $12 is an incredible buy.

I'm pulling a 2002 for this weekend. I see zero reason to think it is anything but delicious right now, just as it has been time after time, year after year. I drink it pretty regularly (bought a ton), and have seen little progression, much less decline.
