Netscape Forum Poll: Do you keep wine in the fridge?

by Robin Garr » Fri Nov 24, 2006 2:52 pm

Following up on the topic of today's 30 Second Wine Advisor, Myths busted?, I've started a new Netscape WineLovers Community poll seeking to learn, in the anonymity of the Voting Booth, how many wine enthusiasts actually break the rules and store wine in the refrigerator.

How about you? Do you abide strictly by the no-fridge rule, or do you use yours as a substitute wine cellar? You're invited to click the ballot choice that fits your winestyle. Please take a moment to vote; the more who participate, the better sense we'll get of how seriously the world's wine enthusiasts take this advice.

Voted rarely.

If wine needs a little chill then the fridge is the easiest. Also sometimes will put a half of the bottle into a half bottle and it goes in the fridge if it's white and back in the cellar if it's red.

Sometimes will pop a white wine briefly in the fridge once opened (on a warm day) to ensure it doesn't get too hot.

I very rarely store unopened bottles in the fridge

I have one of those cheap fridges in the diningroom for all my whites and sparkling wines I intend to drink in the next few months. We call it the winerator. I never use it for long-term storage. I have a relatively cool basement for that purpose!

i always keep a few bottles of white as well as a champagne or two in the fridge. interestingly i also return unfinished whites to the fridge WITHOUT closures of any sort. my experience is that the wine left opened is no worse and maybe better.

Some very interesting and unexpected responses here. We differ from Ian in that we put the half bottles of reds in the fridge too, and bring them out a half hour ahead of time. If the cellar was a little cooler, we might just put them down there too.

I wonder if those of us who answered the poll interpreted it differently. I checked Only To Chill It, but then as often as not I have a half-bottle or two of left over wines in the fridge for a day or two. There's a considerable difference between doing that using the refrigerator to store unopened wines.

I nearly always have an unopened bottle or three in the fridge, and if I don't it's only because I now have an under-counter mount wine cooler which negates the need except for those wines I prefer colder than 47 degrees.

Jenise, what are you going to do with the kitchen out of service?

James, we're going to do the laundry room first and use it as a butler's pantry--microwave, hot plate, toaster oven, and there's a fridge outside in the garage. It will be like camping out. Or so I tell myself.

Robin,

'Constantly' should have been an option. I have a steady rotation of California Sauvignons and Chardonnays in my refridgerator. I don't know how they got there as I don't purchase wines from the great state of CA. In all likelyhood, I'll never drink them.

On occasion, I'll chill a sparkling wine for 30 minutes. However, I will frequently store an unfinished (and recorked) bottle of white wine in our refrigerator until the bottle is consumed or perhaps used in cooking.
