WTN: On the Lamm

2004 Schloss Gobelsburg Gruner Veltliner Ried Lamm
It has been a while since I looked in on one of these. Initially it was rather thin and wanting, but an hour of air filled things out into a rich melange of peach skin and cress. My favorite element of the wine was the texture, which was mouthcoating without any trace of heaviness. Great balance-everything in its place. Delicious now, but no reason to rush. None at all. This wine appears to be built to go the distance.

Who needs White Burgundy when you can have this.

Me. I still need my fix of white Burgundy now and then.

I'm just sick of making burnt orange offerings to the premox gods.

I can't imagine that higher pH and less SO2 usage aren't in-part the premox culprits. Rushing wines to market with less lees-contact and generally working more reductively might have something to do with it as well. But I haven't been up on White Burgs for a few years.

Bill - the most frustrating part is that the people who should know what is going on (i.e. the winemakers) seem generally unconcerned.

Someone should start selling after-market SO2 dosage kits for white Burg: Pop the cork, sparge in a couple of mg SO2 and replace the cork. Problem solved.

Hi David,
I really liked this when I tasted it 3.5 ears ago and as you can see my reaction was very similar.

Sunday, November 22, 2009 - Very impressive. Dense fruit (ie vegetables) and excellent balance, but most notable for mouthfeel of a top Burgundy. Fine now but suspect better to come.

Time for another!
Charles
