Burghound's highest scores

by Jenise » Thu May 02, 2013 4:28 pm

A retail solicitation I just received mentioned that Allen Meadows has only given one 100 point score ever, to a '45 DRC. They also mentioned that he's only ever given two scores over 95 points to new world pinots.

I was just curious what those were. Anyone know?

I thought I might be able to query Cellartracker to figure it out, but so far no luck.

Jenise,

From a very quick web search it looks like Meadow's has given a score of 95 to a number of wines - the most recent (that I could find) being a 2006 Faiveley Chambertin Clos De Beze. I could not find ANY Meadow's scores above 95 though there are apparently a few running around out there.

Has anyone asked Alan? Isn't he a friend of this Board?
Yes, and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows
That too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowin' in the wind
The answer is blowin' in the wind.

Sam - Jenise is looking for Meadows' scores of 95 to new world wines.

James - He has not been on any of the discussion forums in several years.

Searching the Burghound database by minimum score, it looks like Allen has given two new world wines a 95: 2009 Rhys Swan Terrace and 2008 Rhys Horseshoe Vineyard. He has given 9 wines a 94, of which 5 are from Rhys, two from Anthill Farms, 1 from Calera, and 1 from Rivers Marie.

So, of the 11 highest scores Allen has ever given to new world pinots, 7 of them are from Rhys. He has also given 24 California pinots a 93, of which 8 are from Rhys. The highest score Allen has ever given to an Oregon pinot is a 93, and he has given 9 of them. So, 15 of Allen's 44 highest rated new world pinots are from Rhys.

Searching under Burgundy with a minimum score of 99, there are 35 99's and no 100's, but that doesn't pick up the 99+ for 2005 RC. And the 100 score for the 1945 RC shows up in a search for 1945 wines. There are at least 650 notes from Burgundy where Allen has given scores of 96 or higher.
