WTN: Quick Hits - Thanksgiving Dinner (Catoir, Arcadian, Kosta-Browne)

by David M. Bueker » Thu Nov 23, 2006 9:15 pm

Thanksgiving dinner with the folks here at home.

1998 Muller-Catoir Haardter Burgergarten Riesling Spatlese
Drinking really well now. Very tropical, but picking up some smoky and petrol accents. Delicious with the sweeter elements of dinner (e.g. butternut squash, parsnips)

2001 Arcadian Pinot Noir Sleepy Hollow Vineyard
Rich and ripe, but not over the top. Lots of spice, and a very good dinner match. A little bit of earth on the finish. Very good wine. Best overall match with dinner.

2003 Kosta-Browne Pinot Noir Cohn Vineyard
Even richer and riper, though carrying its 15.5% alcohol pretty well. Too big for the food, but very good drinking on its own. Lots of raspberry fruit. Long finish. Needs something meatier than turkey for an accompaniment.

Thanks David.

Have you tried any 04 Mullers?

Love the Sleepy Hollow. The 01 has been a personal favorite for a few years now.

Jason,

I have tried the '04 Catoirs. They are big wines, lacking the finesse of the best from the Schwarz tenure.

This was my first Sleepy Hollow Pinot. It was very good, but I have a hard time liking the wines knowing what a blowhard Joe Davis is. There's so many likeable people in the wine industry, that I can't get excited over wines from a guy that runs down other producers.
