From the Rare Wine Co. in Sonoma:
Chandon de Briailles
A Burgundy Classic at a Stunning Price!
2006 Ile des Vergelesses @ $29.95
Owned by the de Nicolay family since 1834, Domaine Chandon de Briailles' wines are quintessential renderings of northern Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir.
No vineyard is more closely associated with Chandon de Briailles than Pernand-Vergelesses' great "Ile des Vergelesses." This revered premier cru is not far from Corton-Charlemagne, and Clive Coates calls Ile des Vergelesses "surely a contender for elevation to grand cru." John Gilman agrees that it "can often approach grand cru quality." And in the hands of the venerable Domaine Chandon de Briailles, it very nearly does.
Thanks to minimalist vinification—including no new wood—Chandon de Briailles' Ile des Vergelesses is arguably the purest and most expressive example of the vineyard's gifts.
The next lowest price in the U.S. is $47.95!

"Sweet Spot. Outstanding. A brooding nose unwillingly gives up a glimpse of high-toned dark berry fruits though the medium-bodied flavors are sweet, elegant, pure, transparent and delicious while possessing terrific definition and brimming with an intense minerality on the beautifully long finish ... old school but refined old school."
John Gilman in View from the Cellar 92-93
"The Ile de Vergelesses is the upper section of the les Vergelesses vineyard, and it the finest premier cru in Pernand. It is always a more ageworthy, complex and minerally wine than that produced by the slightly deeper and richer soils of les Vergelesses proper, and can often approach grand cru quality. The 2006 from Chandon de Briailles is a beautiful wine in the making, as it offers up a primary and superb nose of black raspberries, currant leaf, a bit of spiced meats, cocoa and an exotic topnote of sandalwood (that does not hail from the oak, as like all the reds here, it is raised in quite old barrels). On the palate the wine is full-bodied, pure, tight and stony, with a lovely core of fruit, impeccable balance, tangy acids and grand cru length and grip on the soil-driven finish. This will be a superb bottle. (Drink between 2016-2050)."
