WTN: Bodegas Lurton Pinot Gris 2006

by Bruce Hayes » Wed Nov 22, 2006 9:24 pm

From J & F Lurton. Mendoza, Argentina.

A Sauvignon Blanc-like nose, with lots of grapefruit and lemon.

Grapefruit, lemon, peppery, loads of zippy acidity, but with noticeable creaminess and roundness in the mouth. As the wine warmed, it showed a totally different side, with some pear and tangerine-orange coming to the forefront and losing much of the earlier citrus fruit edge and picking up a slightly oily texture.

Very interesting to observe the transformation.

An absolute steal at $11.20 (Canadian).

Screwcap closure.

I chanced on a bottle of this several years and couldn't believe how good it was for the price. An inexpensive Malbec of theirs was excellent too. I've learned to look for the Lurton name in wine shops.

I agree, the Lurton Pinot Gris is an excellent white for a great price. For more full bodied reds, check out the Lurton Piedra Negra Malbec. In the premium segment, Lurton makes a high end Malbec called Chacayes that needs cellaring to show its best. If my memory doesnt fail me Chacayes for 4 or 5 stars from Decanter magazine in one of the 2006 issues.

Strangely enough, I had a bottle Saturday night with a big raclette. My semi-wine drinking friends and I quite enjoyed it.

Here's a pic, actually (if it'll work):

My friend Pierre and his girlfriend onthe left, myself and my girlfriend on the right and my five month old som Jacob bringing up the rear...

I sell this down here in Oregon and it is $8. As the price of Oregon Pinot Gris keeps going up I look for other sources. With the 2006 vintage there will be changes since production was up 35-40% over our largest harvest.

I'm in Montreal...we Canadians are the best!

I was a member with the previous board as well though I haven't participated too much as the baby and work are keeping me pretty busy. It hasn't curbed my wine consumption as I thought it would though... :D

We Canadians actually rule the world. We're just quiet about it.

Well, I finally got around to opening this QPR white from Argentina. Thanks to you Bruce for posting this initial tasting note..and all the others who contributed. Sorry folks, no photos this end!!
I am enjoying as they raise Mark Messier`s #11 jersey here in Edmonton!

Colour. Medium straw, very light lemon tinges w. minimum green tinges.

Nose. Minerally, earthy notes with grapefruit, herbal tones. Have to say spot on Bruce, you nailed the zippyness! This is a powerful PG nose here, the BC Okanagan samples cannot match this one for bouquet.

Palate. The wine seemed to drink better after 24 hrs. Bracing acidity really kicks in the moment wine is poured but settles overnight. Big grapefruit finish here and think nectarine quite obvious day two. Hint of RS as it warms, not bitter at all. Pear tends to dominate throughout and agree with the "oily" comment. The finish fills out as it airs, amazing value for ten bucks.
