Help! Syrah Tasting 4/14 (Edmunds St. John?)

by Howie Hart » Sat Mar 30, 2013 8:38 am

As I have posted previously, I'm not a fan of Syrah. Even at MOCOOL a few years ago, where it was the theme wine and I tasted some of the best ones, nothing really rocked my boat. I could appreciate them as well made, etc. Same with Sauvignon Blanc, but that's another story. A local wine group will be having a Syrah tasting in a few weeks and I was thinking of getting Edmunds St. John. The only Edmunds St. John wines I've had are Bone Jolly and Heart of Gold (great wines). There is none available locally, so I could order from Chambers Street. They have 2011 Dry Creek Valley Rocks and Gravel and 2010 and 2011 El Dorado County Syrah Wylie-Fenaughty. Are these way too young and I should look for something else or would they work?

Groucho - That's because it's dry Champagne.

Howie; 2011 was a very cool year, and gave wines (for us, at least) with very modest alcohols, good acidity (even better than usual), and freshness. The two wines at Chambers are quite approachable, and fairly expressive, even only 18 months after harvest. I think there is some pleasure to be taken, and more to come in a few years.

best,

Steve

Thank you Steve, I'll get something for now and something for later.

Howie, while I've not had the current releases yet,I've always enjoyed the R&G and the Wylie-Fenaughty (didn't I just read the 2011 is all Fenaughty?). But for your Syrah tasting, the WF would be better, as the R&G is usually a GSM blend (or at least Grenache/Syrah), correct Steve?
I've generally found the WF pretty approachable (its the Bassetti syrahs that seem to require age to me, thought the WF ages as well).
