2011 Wind Gap Bedrock Mourvedre question

by Drew Hall » Thu Mar 28, 2013 4:30 pm

About a year ago I started to purchase some Wind Gap wines following some positive reviews on this board and others. I'm very much enjoying the wines but don't quite have a handle on how well they age. I have a bottle of the 2011 Wind Gap, Sonoma Valley Mourvedre "Bedrock". Is this an early drinker or should I hold?....David?

Drew, can't help based on personal experience either, but I looked at Cellartracker to see if anyone had opined on the aging. This is the most thorough of the two reviews posted, and the "barely a whisper" tannins make it sound like one to drink sooner than later, but of course no rush.

"Starts out with some very interesting aromatics, leaning unexpectedly toward orange and peach, developing toward bright red fruits and spice. On the palate, more green peaches/peach pit, cherries, and underbrush. Very light on its feet, elegant, with lovely acids and a long finish with barely a wisp of tannin. Not at all like any mourvedre I've had before, which I feel generally show more black fruits, tannin, tar, leather, and meat flavors. Would stump just about anyone in a blind tasting. Lovely stuff, if priced a bit on the high side. I have a Carlisle from the same vineyard and would love to try as a comparison as I bet it is a completely different animal. This is listed at 13.2% and in line with Pax's "new" style, seems to be made in a food-friendly, low brix, elegant style."
My wine shopping and I have never had a problem. Just a perpetual race between the bankruptcy court and Hell.--Rogov
