21 Brix opened the door little more than a year ago and is already a player on the New York wine scene. This Dry Riesling won the Chairman's Award at the Riverside International Competition as well as a Gold at the New York Wine and Food Classic. We are talking extreme Western New York here; the winery is in the Lake Erie AVA only a few miles from the Pennsylvania border. Kris Kane, the young owner of 21 Brix, has known grapes all his life. He comes from a family owning the largest wine grape farm in Western New York and was winemaker at Presque Isle Wine Cellars prior to opening 21 Brix. The 2011 Dry Riesling is perfectly balanced at 0.9 RS with a tangy taste of apples, pears and lemons. It is subtle but not minerally, without a trace of the candy cane taste found in some Rieslings. Nancy and I have tasted many, many Finger Lakes Rieslings over the years. She says this one ranks with the best and I can't disagree. $18 at the winery.
