I was just going out to do the groceries when his wife runs out of the building screaming with her arm covered in blood. Gladly the police and ambulance arrived in just two minutes so it seems she'll be ok. But I did feel like a bit of Bach and a glass or three of wine was needed after this particular trip to the grocer's.
Goldberg Variations and some Domaine Loew Pinot Gris Bruderbach Clos Marienberg 2008 provided just the escapism I desired from this suddenly ugly world. The more I try Alsace 2008s, the more I like them. It is a terrible generalization for sure, but they seem to have purity and grace and highish acidity so seem much more aesthetically pleasing to me than the much praised 2007s which, if you'll allow another gross generalization, seem a bit on the fruity, rich side of things. (Why is it that the "established" critics always call the big, ripe, sweetly fruity vintages the great ones?)
This PG has an indice de sucrosité of 3/10 so it has obvious RS but also wonderful acidity for the grape and it has the purest aromas with all the stereotypes of the grape (spice, flowers, etc.) well in evidence. Beautifully balanced with real nervousness. It is weighty but not excessively so (I do like Alsace PG but sometimes, especially in the warm years, I do find excess weight) but the finish has great freshness. Lovely.
I haven't seen much praise for the 2008s - do the Alsace fans here enjoy them as much as I have? Or has my admittedly small sampling just been of all the right wines?
