WTN: 2007 Scherrer "Big Brother" Pinot Noir

by Diane (Long Island) » Fri Sep 14, 2012 7:00 pm

I love Burgundy. From California, you will find Rhys, Arcadian, and Scherrer in my cellar, and what they all have in common is restraint and balance.

The 2007 Big Brother has it all in spades. Raspberries, anise, and florals on the nose. The palate is ripe, but not jammy, with a firm acid backbone and fine tannins. My last bottle, and each one has been a joy to drink.

Thanks for the note. Scherrer has escaped my mitts so far, but after reading this note I ordered a few.

What did you end up getting?

Besides Pinot, btw, I love the Russian River and Big Brother, Fred makes a fantastic Cabernet and a Zin that ages amazingly well, and becomes Claret like. While I am not a big fan of domestic Syrah, I have had really good examples from Scherrer. Last night at our Rosh Hashonah dinner, a friend opened a Scherrer 2007 Helfer Vineyard Chardonnay that was lovely (I even took another pour at the end of the meal) and a 2006 Old and Mature Vines Zin.

I met Fred about 5 years ago at his winery when I first tasted his wines, and have been a fan ever since.

I grabbed an 07 Russian and another which I don't remember now--not the Big Brother, that wasn't available from my source. Thanks for describing his other wines. I should go check out his website and get a better sense of everything he does. I'm surprised that his stuff hasn't crossed my radar before now, with that kind of variety.

I'm fond of Scherrer Pinot Noir and Zinfandel but not very familiar with the Syrah. I visited the winery in early August when they had an open house on Saturday and Sunday. (Unfortunately, I went by the return address on the postcard notice and ended up first at their home before finding my way to the winery.)
